Link Building & "Organic" SEO

So in the last lesson you learned a little more about the potential SEO benefits if inbound & outbound links. Now it's time to look more at how to better your efforts by actually searching out quality link relationship building conduits such as various reciprocal linking relationships, directory submission methods, and using social websites to your advantage. We'll even give a brief introduction to Pay-Per-Click (PPC) and other cost based SEM initiatives.

There are tools available to make these tasks a lot easier on you and are quite efficient. One SEO tool we recommend is Internet Business Promoter which locates relevant resources to consider pursuing inbound links from. Otherwise it's up to you to locate your own resources. Don't worry, it just takes a bit more work on your part, and a little more introduction to yet another technique to search engine optimization. So let's drill down some tips.

  • Organic SEO Links: What is organic SEO? More importantly, what is organic linking? It's another one of those clever buzz words you'll hear from a lot of search engine optimization crowds. It's for the most part referring to the free methods of increasing your pagerank through backlinks from other directly relavent websites.

This method involves directly finding websites as closely related to your website in its content and get a direct link to your website on it. There's usually more than one way to accomplish this. The most obvious of which is just emailing the webmaster and asking them directly. Most of the time they will at minimum request a reciprocal link to their website from yours, sort of give and take. However if their website is directly relavent to the topic of your own then no harm no foul. To utilize organic SEO you can expect to spend a lot of time doing research, but it is the best way to better SEO.

Remember, if they place the ever useful rel="nofollow" tag in the backlinks they provide you, then it's not so helpful.

  • Directory Submission: Can either be an excellent option towards building a good backlink base within various topic organized web directories. If you decide to use this option then there are usually numerous both free and paid listings available for the topic of your website. Some will require a reciprocal link to at least to get through the submission process. However remember a few key points when choosing the directories you're going to submit your website too.

    • What is it's current pagerank and other SEO stats?

    • How relavent is the directory organizational structure, how defined can your listing be?

    • Is it worth having to provide a reciprocal link?

    • Does that directory appear in the first 5 pages of search engine results for your chosen keywords?

A directory of special interest for efforts towards better search engine optimization is the Open Directory Proejct (DMOZ) which is heavily used by many of the major search engines. Since it is a very user editor driven community based project, each listing is reviewed for relavency and other criteria before being successfully submitted to the directory. So pay extra attention to their process on how to suggest a site for listing consideration.

         > How to find relavent link directories for organic SEO

The most simple approach is to go behave like someone potentially trying to find your website. Go to the top search engines and perform searches for the relavent keywords and keyphrases that target your website's content. If you find a directory listing other relavent links within the first 5 pages of your search results. Chances are you could benefit from a backlink directly in the directory listing found in the search results.

Another way is to refine your search parameters and look for certain text strings which would further ease the burden of locating relavent topic websites that would allow you to add your URL to their website for a backlink. Here's an example, if you were to enter this search string into one of the major search engines it would bring back all the relavent websites in their search results listing with the words "Directory", "My Keyword or Keyphrase", and "add url" (tells you that you can probably add your link) to help find the better directory options.

    Example
intext:"Directory" AND "My Keyword or Keyphrase" AND "add url"

  • Social Websites: Should be treated just like the directories when it comes to relavency. However, if you come across a website with relavent subject matter to your website and they provide dynamic content including forms of user interaction like forums, comments, reviews. It can't usually hurt to slip your optimized link into your signature or comment field. However there are exceptions to the rule we'll cover in another article.

  • Pay Per Click (PPC): Is another alternative to gathering more inbound links. However this method can be expensive depending on the keyword classification and which service you use. We won't go into much detail here since there would be so much to cover over the the intricacies offered from so many companies. However, Google Adwords® can definitely be a great place to start.

Before moving on to the next page of this beginner's guide to SEO, go ahead and go find yourself a few new backlinks for your website. You will feel better and there's no better time then the present to start increasing your search engine traffic through the inbound links and organic SEO methods.
